Türkiye and Iraq Deepen Security Ties as Development Road Gains Strategic Importance

Türkiye-Iraq security cooperation is entering a new stage as both countries prepare to strengthen coordination ahead of the summer. Officials from Ankara and Baghdad plan to accelerate talks after a temporary slowdown linked to Iraq’s election cycle. Moreover, both sides aim to address regional security concerns and protect major economic projects.

Diplomatic contacts between the two countries have gained momentum in recent weeks. As a result, leaders are preparing for a series of meetings focused on security and infrastructure. In addition, officials hope stronger coordination will support long-term regional stability.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, Baghdad has adjusted its approach to counterterrorism issues. Iraqi authorities now view security threats as a shared challenge. Consequently, cooperation between the two countries has expanded.

Officials also stressed the importance of protecting the Development Road project. The trade corridor aims to connect the Gulf region with Europe through Türkiye. Therefore, both governments consider stability along the route a strategic priority.

The project requires secure transportation networks and reliable infrastructure. For that reason, Baghdad and Ankara have increased consultations regarding security measures. Furthermore, both countries hope the corridor will boost trade and economic growth.

Meanwhile, upcoming meetings are expected to focus on several security concerns. Turkish officials plan to present specific requests during the talks. These demands include the removal of militant elements from Kandil, Sinjar, and the Sulaymaniyah area.

In addition, officials expect a senior Iraqi delegation to visit Türkiye soon. Diplomatic channels are also likely to become more active during the summer months. Consequently, observers anticipate more frequent meetings between both sides.

Türkiye-Iraq security cooperation also includes military training and coordination programs. Agreements signed last year laid the foundation for broader cooperation. Therefore, both countries are moving forward with plans to activate two joint centers.

The first center will operate as a Security Coordination Hub in Baghdad. Meanwhile, the second facility will function as a Training and Cooperation Center in Bashiqa. Together, the centers aim to strengthen cooperation between security institutions.

Under the agreements, Turkish military personnel will provide specialized training. The programs will cover intelligence gathering and reconnaissance operations. In addition, instructors will focus on combat tactics and operational coordination.

Federal Iraqi forces and local security units will participate in the training programs. Consequently, authorities hope to improve capabilities against militant networks. Officials also believe stronger institutions can enhance national security.

Analysts view the latest developments as an important step in bilateral relations. Increased coordination could support economic projects and regional stability. At the same time, both governments hope that closer ties will address shared security concerns.

As discussions continue, attention remains focused on the next round of meetings. Leaders from both countries are expected to expand cooperation further. Therefore, Türkiye-Iraq security cooperation is likely to remain a major priority in the coming months.
