Iraq-Portugal Relations 2026: Talks Resume on Reopening Embassy in Baghdad

Iraq and Portugal have discussed steps to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, including the possible reopening of Portugal’s embassy in Baghdad after nearly two decades.

The discussions took place during a phone call between Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel on Sunday. As a result, the Iraq-Portugal relations 2026 agenda gained fresh momentum.

During the conversation, both ministers reviewed opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation across several sectors. In addition, they explored ways to strengthen political and economic relations between the two countries.

A key topic focused on the potential reopening of Portugal’s embassy in Baghdad. The diplomatic mission has remained closed since 2007 because of security concerns. However, recent improvements in Iraq’s security environment have encouraged renewed discussions on restoring a permanent diplomatic presence.

The Iraq-Portugal relations 2026 talks also addressed cooperation between Iraq and the European Union. Both sides highlighted the importance of closer engagement with European institutions and greater political coordination.

Furthermore, Hussein emphasized the value of Portuguese support for Iraq’s efforts to deepen relations with the European Union. He also stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in areas that support economic development and diplomatic engagement.

Meanwhile, Rangel expressed interest in strengthening ties with Iraq and exploring new opportunities for collaboration. Consequently, both countries agreed on the importance of maintaining dialogue and enhancing cooperation in the future.

The possible reopening of Portugal’s embassy would mark a significant step in bilateral relations. Moreover, it could help increase diplomatic exchanges, trade opportunities, and political cooperation between Baghdad and Lisbon.

The Iraq-Portugal relations 2026 discussions reflect Iraq’s broader efforts to strengthen partnerships with European countries. At the same time, Baghdad continues to seek greater international engagement and investment opportunities.

As diplomatic contacts continue, both governments appear committed to building stronger relations and expanding cooperation across a range of political and economic areas.
