Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has announced the imminent launch of ultra-high voltage transmission lines connecting the Central Euphrates, Maysan, and Wasit provinces. This initiative aims to strengthen Iraq’s national electricity grid and improve power reliability across these regions.
During a visit to the Ministry of Electricity headquarters, Al-Sudani inaugurated four new 400 kV transmission lines via video conference. These lines will link the southern provinces with the Central Euphrates, significantly enhancing the power transmission and interconnection capacity. The newly established network stretches over 412 kilometers and includes the construction of 960 transmission towers.
The Prime Minister applauded the efforts of engineers, technicians, and the private sector, highlighting that this project marks the first-ever connection of these provinces through ultra-high voltage transmission lines. He emphasized that this development will stabilize Iraq’s power generation system and ensure continuous electricity supply to citizens.
Furthermore, Al-Sudani reviewed the Ministry’s preparations to secure sufficient energy during the upcoming Arbaeen pilgrimage. The plan involves adding 16 substations to handle increased electrical loads along the pilgrims’ routes. Special power lines will also serve pilgrimage tents without disturbing residential areas.
He stressed the importance of these ultra-high voltage transmission lines within the Basra–Nasiriyah–Samawah–Diwaniyah network. The government is focusing on strengthening electricity transmission and distribution to reduce power losses and maintain a steady supply.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani revealed that work on the ultra-high voltage transmission line linking Maysan, Wasit, and the Central Euphrates will start soon. Since the government took office, it has identified key issues in the electricity sector and implemented corrective measures.
The Prime Minister added that combined-cycle projects are underway to increase production capacity efficiently, without additional fuel consumption. He also mentioned that renewable energy projects will soon contribute to overall power generation, alongside gas-fired and thermal power stations currently in progress.
He underscored that progress in power projects must be paired with effective consumption management to solve the electricity crisis permanently. The Ministry of Electricity’s plans are designed to support the country’s broader development goals in housing, industry, commerce, and other vital sectors.
Al-Sudani concluded by affirming that securing energy resources is crucial for comprehensive national development and boosting economic and commercial activities across Iraq.
