Modern Irrigation System Distribution Boosts Production and Self-Sufficiency in Iraq

Modern irrigation system distribution is helping Iraq transform its agricultural sector. For the third year in a row, the country achieved wheat self-sufficiency. This marks a significant victory for the Ministry of Agriculture and Iraqi farmers alike.

According to Mahdi Saher Al-Jubouri, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, this success resulted from adopting modern techniques. The modern irrigation system distribution played a crucial role in increasing production. Moreover, farmers embraced these technologies and followed guidance provided by the ministry.

Since 2023, Iraq has imported 13,000 irrigation systems from top international suppliers. The ministry distributed them through its Irrigation and Mechanization Project. Farmers received a 30% subsidy and an extended ten-year repayment period. Additionally, the process to obtain these systems was made simple and quick.

This initiative not only increased productivity but also strengthened food security. It reduced Iraq’s reliance on imports and promoted sustainable farming practices. As a result, many farmers saw improved yields and water efficiency.

Meanwhile, the ministry remains committed to supporting agricultural modernization. Moreover, officials continue to deliver systems across the country and encourage farmers to adopt new techniques. Furthermore, Al-Jubouri urged them to use laser leveling tools and advanced irrigation systems.

He also emphasized the importance of high-yield, drought- and salt-resistant seeds. These seeds are developed by the Agricultural Research Directorate and leading Iraqi seed companies. Among them are the Mesopotamia Seed Company and the Iraqi Seed Production Company.

These trusted companies produce disease-free seeds that perform well under Iraq’s challenging climate. In turn, this helps farmers maximize output and reduce crop failure.

The modern irrigation system distribution directly contributes to Iraq’s agricultural goals. It promotes efficient resource use and ensures long-term sustainability. As Iraq continues modernizing its agricultural infrastructure, it strengthens its position in regional food production.

Iraq combines local expertise with international technologies to set a new standard for agricultural progress. The Ministry of Agriculture continues to provide strong support. With this backing, Iraq moves toward even greater success in farming and food security.
