Missile Strike Hits Italian Base in Erbil Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The Italian base in Erbil attack has raised new concerns about security in northern Iraq as regional tensions continue to rise. Officials confirmed that a missile struck an Italian military facility in the Kurdistan Region overnight. However, authorities reported no casualties among Italian personnel stationed at the base.

Italy’s defense ministry confirmed the incident on Thursday. The ministry said a missile struck the Italian military base located in Erbil. The facility hosts Italian troops working alongside international forces in the region.

Guido Crosetto confirmed the strike in a statement released on social media. He said the missile hit the base but caused no injuries. Italian personnel quickly moved to secure bunkers during the incident.

Meanwhile, Antonio Tajani strongly condemned the attack and voiced support for Italian troops. He said he contacted Italy’s ambassador in Iraq after the strike occurred. The ambassador confirmed that all soldiers remained safe inside protective shelters.

Tajani also expressed gratitude for the service of Italian forces deployed in Iraq. He praised their commitment to international security operations and regional stability.

Italy maintains around 300 troops in Erbil as part of the international coalition mission. These troops operate under the Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State. Their mission focuses on training Kurdish security forces and supporting counterterrorism operations against the Islamic State.

The Italian base in Erbil attack occurred during a period of escalating regional conflict. The broader confrontation between Iran, Israel, and the United States has intensified in recent weeks.

Military operations connected to that conflict have targeted security facilities and infrastructure across the region. Analysts say these developments increase risks for international forces stationed in Iraq.

Iran has also expanded its response across several fronts. Officials in Tehran recently claimed that they launched more than 2,000 drones and over 600 missiles targeting U.S. and Israeli positions.

Additionally, Iran-aligned armed groups have intensified their operations across Iraq. Some of those factions operate within the network, often described as the Axis of Resistance.

Several of these groups have recently targeted sites linked to the United States in Iraq. Some attacks have also focused on locations within the Kurdistan Region.

Monitoring data from Rudaw indicates that drone activity has increased sharply in recent weeks. Reports show that nearly 250 drones have headed toward the Kurdistan Region during the latest escalation.

More than 200 of those drones and missiles targeted Erbil province alone. The attacks have caused casualties and injuries among civilians and security personnel.

At least four people have died during those incidents. Authorities have also reported injuries affecting nearly 19 others.

Despite the ongoing escalation, officials confirmed that the Italian base in Erbil attack did not result in casualties among Italian troops. Nevertheless, the strike highlights the growing security risks facing foreign forces stationed in Iraq.

Security analysts warn that continued attacks could further destabilize the region. They also caution that international bases may remain potential targets as the broader conflict unfolds.
