Baghdad, Iraq- The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the distribution of olive seedlings to government departments across Iraq. This is part of a broader initiative to enhance olive cultivation in the country.
Mahdi Sahar, the Ministry’s administrative undersecretary, shared that Iraq ranks among the top 30 olive-producing countries globally. He emphasized that the ministry’s current focus is on increasing olive varieties. These varieties are well-suited to the Iraqi environment and offer high productivity.
The Ministry’s Horticulture Department is leading a national program aimed at multiplying different fruit and olive varieties. This includes particularly high-oil types and dual-purpose varieties used for both food and oil production. As part of this program, the Ministry is offering training sessions for farmers. They are also distributing olive seedlings free of charge to government institutions.
Sahar also pointed out that Iraq is ranked ninth in the Arab world for olive production. There is a growing emphasis on improving the cultivation of olive varieties that meet the country’s needs for both oil and table olives. This initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing sustainable agricultural practices. It will also boost Iraq’s agricultural output.
