Iraq’s ISIS Detainee Transfer Continues as Hundreds Arrive from Syria

Iraq’s ISIS detainee transfer continued on Saturday as hundreds of prisoners arrived from Syria. The operation marks the second wave since the United States announced plans to relocate up to 7,000 fighters.

Iraqi security forces reported that US troops are moving inmates by air and land. On Saturday, approximately 1,000 detainees reached Iraqi territory. Officials stated that the process is part of an ongoing effort to secure extremist prisoners in safe facilities.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani authorized a joint committee to supervise the transfers. The group includes representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the Iraqi Air Force, and the Counter-Terrorism Service. They ensure that every aspect of the operation runs smoothly.

Authorities explained that the inmates include various nationalities, such as Europeans and Iraqis. They will be divided among at least three prisons across Iraq. This measure aims to improve security and management of the detainees.

This transfer follows an initial group of 150 prisoners, which included high-ranking ISIS officials and foreign nationals. They were previously held in a prison in northeastern Syria. Observers expect the transfer process to continue for several days, as operations proceed in phases.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have held thousands of alleged ISIS members and their families since the group’s defeat in 2019. They keep detainees, including foreigners, in camps and prisons across northeastern Syria. Iraq now focuses on relocating these individuals to secure Iraqi facilities under full government control.

Legal procedures will begin as soon as the detainees arrive. The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council confirmed that all individuals will face formal legal proceedings. Authorities emphasized that no detainee will bypass the judicial process, ensuring accountability and rule of law.

Analysts note that Iraq’s ISIS detainee transfer is crucial for regional security. It reduces the risk of escape or reactivation of extremist networks. Coordinated operations between Iraqi and US forces aim to prevent any security breaches.

Security officials also highlighted the humanitarian aspects of the transfer. Detainees will receive proper care and access to necessary facilities during relocation. Meanwhile, ongoing coordination will monitor compliance with international and Iraqi legal standards.

Overall, Iraq’s ISIS detainee transfer represents a strategic step to strengthen Iraq’s counterterrorism framework. Officials are working to balance security, justice, and humanitarian obligations while keeping the operation efficient and controlled.

Clearly, this transfer is not only a logistical operation but also a key part of Iraq’s broader fight against terrorism.
