Iraq Deploys Pollution Monitoring Sensors to Protect Public Health

Baghdad, Iraq – Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has approved the activation of environmental pollution monitoring sensors in meteorological stations nationwide. This step aims to enhance pollution detection and safeguard public health, according to Dr. Salman Al-Bahadli, Director General of the General Authority for Meteorology and Seismology.

Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi has played a key role in supporting the initiative, emphasizing the importance of integrating pollution sensors into Iraq’s 24-hour meteorological network. These devices will issue early warnings when pollution levels exceed safe limits, helping protect individuals with respiratory conditions and improving overall environmental monitoring.

Dr. Al-Bahadli stated that the sensors will track air, water, and soil pollution, allowing authorities to respond quickly to environmental risks. The Iraq Climate and Scientific Research Center highlighted that the system will identify both industrial and natural pollution sources, enabling policymakers to develop targeted strategies for pollution reduction.

Beyond government use, the collected data will support academic research, climate change assessments, and scientific studies, providing a foundation for data-driven environmental policies. The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening Iraq’s environmental monitoring and response capabilities.
