Iraq Builds First Regional Seed Bank

Iraq seed bank project is now underway in Sulaymaniyah, marking a new era in regional food preservation efforts. This groundbreaking initiative protects Iraq’s ancient agricultural heritage.

Backed by the European Union, this effort is implemented through the FAO in partnership with the Iraqi government. The seed bank will store genetic resources vital for the country’s future.

Importantly, the facility ensures long-term conservation of native seeds and ancient crops. As a result, Iraq strengthens food security for future generations.

In addition to that, the Iraq seed bank project preserves more than 3,500 plant species found in the country. These plants have deep historic, scientific, and nutritional value.

Moreover, the project supports local farming by retaining rare genetic traits like drought resistance. This enables farmers to adapt to changing climate conditions more easily.

For example, seeds from wild cereals and vegetables will be protected in secure vaults. This adds a safety net for agricultural recovery during crises.

The seed bank also includes state-of-the-art laboratories and research areas. These facilities allow scientists to test, analyze, and teach crop genetics.

Furthermore, the project offers modern data systems to track and classify seeds accurately. Such digital records improve planning and promote future agricultural development.

Through this collaboration, Iraq becomes a leader in seed conservation across the region. While other countries face climate stress, Iraq is building long-term solutions.

Equally important, this initiative boosts the country’s global standing in sustainable agriculture and innovation. The benefits will extend far beyond national borders.

With ongoing support, the Iraq seed bank project will create a stronger, more secure future for local farming and biodiversity protection.

In conclusion, this project reflects Iraq’s commitment to safeguarding its roots while planting seeds for tomorrow’s success. With continued collaboration, Iraq can lead agricultural innovation across the Middle East.
The seed bank stands as a symbol of resilience, science, and national pride.
