Iraq and Iran Agree to Enhance Border Port Procedures and Electronic Data Transfer

Baghdad, Iraq- On Wednesday, Major General Omar Adnan Al-Waili, head of the Border Ports Authority, met with Muhammad Kazem Al-Sadiq, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Iraq, to discuss the current status and future improvements in the operations of the border ports between the two countries. The meeting, held in Al-Waili’s office, focused on strengthening cooperation in handling both visitors and goods, especially during major religious occasions.

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to expand the electronic data transfer mechanism for both visitors and goods. This initiative aims to simplify border procedures while enhancing control and efficiency. The expanded electronic systems are designed to streamline the movement of people and shipments across the border, ultimately improving the overall flow and security of cross-border traffic.

Additionally, both parties agreed to continue regular meetings between the engineering teams from both Iraq and Iran to identify and prepare new gate locations for the border ports. These meetings will also facilitate ongoing communication to address any issues or delays that may arise during operations, ensuring prompt solutions.

Major General Al-Waili emphasized that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is fully supportive of the development and rehabilitation of the border ports. This initiative is seen as an important step in improving Iraq’s infrastructure and its cooperation with Iran.

Ambassador Al-Sadiq commended the Border Ports Authority’s continuous efforts in monitoring and improving port operations, noting that the effective management of the ports positively impacts the flow of travelers and goods. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation to maintain the progress made and ensure the smooth functioning of border operations.

The agreement underscores the shared commitment of Iraq and Iran to enhance cross-border coordination, ensuring that travelers and shipments can move seamlessly between the two countries, particularly during times of high demand such as religious pilgrimages.
