Gas Capacity Growth Boosts Iraq’s Energy Future

The gas capacity growth in Iraq continues to support the country’s rising energy needs. Basrah Gas Company (BGC) has added 80 million standard cubic feet of gas to its production. This increase marks a major step in the nation’s energy development strategy.

This expansion reflects Iraq’s broader plans to strengthen energy infrastructure in the south. Power demands keep rising, and authorities aim to stay ahead of future challenges. The Deputy Director of BGC, Marfa Kadhim Al-Asadi, confirmed this in a recent media statement. He emphasized the company’s commitment to increasing investments in the gas sector.

BGC operates under Iraq’s first licensing round. It manages three major gas fields in the south. The company plans to enhance gas collection and output over the next three years. These steps will directly address energy supply concerns, especially during peak demand periods.

Al-Asadi also explained that BGC is applying a clear strategy to meet expected power challenges. These could become more severe during hotter seasons when demand spikes. As a result, the focus remains on quick project completion and efficient coordination.

To reach these goals, BGC has partnered with field operators like British Petroleum. Their collaboration has fast-tracked several projects aimed at boosting gas capacity. According to Al-Asadi, many of these projects are ahead of schedule. Some that were planned for late 2025 will now finish much sooner.

Two key projects have driven the gas capacity growth. First, the South Rumaila gas desalination project adds 40 million cubic feet. Second, the Majnoon gas field brings in another 40 million cubic feet. Together, they push Iraq’s gas output significantly higher.

Additionally, part of this increased gas supply will support Iraq’s national power grid. This move will help meet the country’s rising electricity demand while reducing strain on existing resources.

With this steady gas capacity growth, Iraq positions itself to better serve its citizens. The efforts by BGC, along with support from key partners, show clear progress. If this momentum continues, Iraq’s energy future looks brighter and more stable.
