Drone Shot Down Near Koya as Kurdistan Security Concerns Continue

Kurdistan security concerns intensified early Saturday after local officials confirmed a drone incident near the Koya district. Authorities said defense forces shot down the drone before it reached its intended destination in eastern Erbil province.

The drone reportedly crashed in the Koya plains around 1:30 a.m. Officials confirmed the area remained far from Azadi Camp and nearby civilian zones. Residents later reported hearing sounds linked to the interception operation.

Koya has witnessed repeated attacks in recent weeks. Azadi Camp, which houses families linked to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, faced several strikes recently. On Thursday, five drones targeted the camp and nearby locations.

Kawa Bahrami, a senior KDPI member, confirmed the latest incident during comments to local media. He stated the drone fell in open plains away from the group’s positions. He also stressed that no casualties occurred during the overnight event.

Meanwhile, Hama Nazif Qaderi rejected reports claiming armed positions suffered new bombardments overnight. He confirmed the group’s areas remained untouched throughout Saturday morning.

Kurdistan security concerns have continued since fighting erupted between the United States and Iran earlier this year. The conflict began in late February after large-scale aerial operations targeted Iranian military and strategic sites.

Iran later responded with missile and drone attacks across several Middle Eastern areas. Armed groups allied with Tehran also launched strikes inside Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Consequently, tensions quickly spread across border regions and strategic locations.

Although Pakistan helped mediate a ceasefire on April 8, smaller attacks continue across the region. Security officials continue monitoring aerial threats despite the reduction in large military operations.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government, more than 800 attacks struck the Region between late February and April 20. Those incidents caused 20 deaths and injured at least 123 people.

Regional authorities repeatedly condemned the attacks and rejected involvement in the wider conflict. Officials emphasized that the Kurdistan Region should not become a battlefield for regional disputes.

However, Iran continues to accuse Iranian Kurdish opposition groups of threatening national security. As a result, tensions along the border areas remain high despite the ceasefire agreement.

Earlier reports also suggested another drone incident near the Shaqlawa district. However, Shaqlawa Mayor Swara Akram denied those claims and dismissed reports of fresh attacks.

Kurdistan security concerns continue shaping daily life across several districts in Erbil province. Residents remain alert as officials strengthen monitoring efforts against possible drone activity.
