Iraq Summons Turkish Ambassador After Fidan Remarks Row

Türkiye has rejected accusations of interference following controversy over recent comments about the PKK presence in Iraq. Officials said critics distorted the remarks and misunderstood their intent. Moreover, Ankara stressed that it respects Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The dispute emerged after statements from Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan sparked strong reactions inside Iraq.

Oncu Keceli, spokesperson for Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry, responded to the criticism on Wednesday. He said several Iraqi media outlets misrepresented Fidan’s Feb. 9 interview. Furthermore, he emphasized that Türkiye seeks stronger institutional cooperation with Iraq. He added that Ankara prioritizes security coordination and counterterrorism partnerships with Baghdad.

Keceli explained that Fidan aimed to highlight risks linked to the PKK presence in Iraq. He said Türkiye views the group as a serious regional security threat. In addition, he noted that the group maintains positions in Sinjar, Makhmour, and the Qandil Mountains. He argued that these locations allow the group to operate across borders. Therefore, he said Türkiye remains determined to see those areas cleared.

At the same time, Keceli stressed that Türkiye supports Iraq’s unity and stability. He rejected claims that Ankara seeks to interfere in domestic Iraqi affairs. Instead, he said Türkiye wants deeper coordination with Iraqi authorities. He also stated that cooperation could address shared security challenges more effectively.

However, tensions increased after Fidan’s earlier remarks triggered political backlash in Iraq. He had said the PKK controls areas inside Iraq. Moreover, he urged Baghdad to take what he called a wiser decision. He also suggested a short military operation could end the group’s presence. Iraqi officials considered those comments diplomatically sensitive.

As a result, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry summoned Türkiye’s ambassador in Baghdad. Officials expressed concern about the impact on bilateral relations. They warned that such statements could strain cooperation between both countries. Nevertheless, diplomatic channels remained open after the meeting.

Meanwhile, analysts noted that security disputes often complicate ties between Ankara and Baghdad. The issue of the PKK presence in Iraq has remained a recurring source of tension. Turkish forces have carried out cross-border operations for years. Iraq has repeatedly criticized those actions as violations of sovereignty.

Despite disagreements, both governments continue to stress the importance of dialogue. Officials on both sides have called for balanced cooperation. They argue that joint security efforts remain essential for regional stability. In this context, the debate over the PKK presence in Iraq will likely remain central to future relations.
