Iraq Electricity Power Plants Project with Shanghai Electric

The Iraq electricity power plants initiative has taken a major step forward through a new deal with China’s Shanghai Electric. The Ministry of Electricity confirmed the agreement, which includes construction of thermal plants using locally produced fuel. The facilities will generate up to 10,000 megawatts, marking a breakthrough for Iraq’s long-troubled energy sector.

According to the Ministry, this project is part of a broader strategy designed to stabilize the national grid. Authorities believe the initiative will increase reliability, reduce shortages, and support greater efficiency across the network. Officials also highlighted that using domestic fuel ensures sustainability and reduces reliance on imports.

Spokesperson Ahmed Musa explained that the ministry has already started executive procedures to move forward. He stressed that these plants will transform Iraq’s energy landscape. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani previously stated that Iraq’s grid will add 60,000 megawatts after several key projects finish.

The Iraq electricity power plants deal directly supports this vision. By relying on local fuel sources, the government expects long-term progress toward energy independence. Furthermore, the plan aligns with Iraq’s strategy of diversifying energy production.

Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel noted that Iraq has prioritized domestic fuel projects since last year. He emphasized that self-sufficiency remains the government’s main goal, particularly after recent crises caused by dependence on imported fuel.

Additionally, officials underscored the importance of diversifying energy sources. Building plants that use Iraqi fuel instead of imports strengthens national security and supports economic growth. The strategy also includes reducing imports from Iran and replacing them with domestic solutions.

Moreover, the Ministry of Oil is working to capture flared gas for power generation. This step will not only reduce waste but also stabilize supply and cut costs. Experts say these efforts could transform Iraq’s position in regional energy markets.

Ultimately, the Iraq electricity power plants project with Shanghai Electric shows the government’s determination. With consistent progress, Iraq can move closer to achieving energy self-sufficiency, strengthening its economy, and improving services for millions of citizens.
