Iraq Launches Vision 2050 to Transform Economy and Society

On Saturday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani officially launched Iraq launches Vision 2050. The plan focuses on long-term development and economic transformation. It aims to make Iraq a gateway for 20% of trade between Asia and Europe.

The launch ceremony took place in Baghdad. Notably, government officials, diplomats, business leaders, academics, and experts attended the event.

Furthermore, al-Sudani said the vision builds on four pillars: a productive society, a sovereign and sustainable economy, a modern government, and balanced international ties. Importantly, youth remain a top priority.

Meanwhile, the government began working on the plan in March 2023. Additionally, the Ministry of Planning, the Advisory Board, and the McKinsey Global Institute helped develop the strategy.

“Iraq launches Vision 2050 as a national effort involving the state, private sector, universities, civil society, and youth,” al-Sudani said. He also added that the plan signals Iraq’s rise as a force for peace and prosperity.

Moreover, the prime minister highlighted key elements of the vision. These include structural reforms, crisis readiness, and digital monitoring. Finally, the government signed a consulting contract with KBR to guide implementation.

Al-Sudani said Iraq cannot depend on fossil fuels alone. Instead, it must use technology and artificial intelligence to shape the future economy.

“We want Iraq to be the gateway for 20% of Asia’s trade to Europe,” he said. This will happen through the Grand Faw Port and the Development Road project. The plan aims to create 1.5 million jobs. It also expects to meet 70% of food, water, and energy needs with green initiatives.

The government plans to reduce oil dependence. It also wants to increase the private sector’s role and ensure sustainable growth. “We look forward to an Iraq free from oil rentier dependence,” al-Sudani said. He envisions a diverse, stable economy in the decades ahead.

Clearly, Iraq launches Vision 2050 to build a prosperous and stable future for its people and the region.
