Sanofi Partners with Iraq to Boost Local Pharma Sector

Sanofi partners with Iraq to build a stronger and more sustainable pharmaceutical industry. The deal represents a milestone for Iraq’s healthcare future.

During a recent workshop on biosimilars and intellectual property, Iraq’s Deputy Health Minister, Hani al-Oqabi, explained the importance of the agreement. He confirmed that the partnership with France’s Sanofi covers more than just medicine production. It also opens doors for deeper investment in Iraq’s health infrastructure and biotech sector.

Sanofi partners with Iraq at a time when the country is actively expanding cooperation with international companies. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has consistently prioritized these efforts. He believes foreign investment is key to modernizing Iraq’s economy and essential services.

At the same time, Iraq is negotiating with other global health companies. Hammoudi al-Lami, the prime minister’s advisor on private sector growth, revealed new developments. According to him, AstraZeneca is considering a pharmaceutical plant in Iraq. This project would mark another major step for the local drug market.

Not only British and French firms are involved. US healthcare giant Baxter has also shown interest in entering Iraq’s growing medical market. In addition, several companies from the Gulf States are exploring opportunities to participate in Iraq’s pharmaceutical expansion.

In a separate move, Iraq signed a major deal to produce insulin inside the country. This agreement, announced in April, includes a top Polish insulin manufacturer and a German corporation. Both firms agreed to help set up a factory in Nineveh Province, located in northern Iraq.

This production facility will follow strict European health and quality standards. The Iraqi government hopes this initiative will secure access to vital medications and reduce reliance on imports.

Sanofi partners with Iraq not only to expand access to medicine but also to help transfer technology and expertise. These projects fully align with the government’s strategy to grow the national healthcare sector and encourage industrial innovation. Through international partnerships, Iraq is setting the foundation for a healthier, self-reliant future.
