Al-Sudani Launches Al-Diwaniyah Refinery Expansion to Strengthen Iraq’s Energy Sector

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani launched the Al-Diwaniyah Refinery Expansion Project via video conference. The event marked the beginning of a key phase in Iraq’s energy development strategy.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the project includes new refining units. These units will add 70,000 barrels per day in capacity. As a result, the total refining capacity will reach 90,000 barrels per day.

The Prime Minister explained that the Al-Diwaniyah Refinery Expansion Project fits the government’s broader oil sector vision. Iraq aims to convert 40% of its crude oil into refined products. This shift will meet local demand and also support export growth.

He added that Iraq is nearing full self-sufficiency in oil derivatives. Multiple ongoing refinery projects will help achieve this goal. These include expansions in Maysan, Al-Diwaniyah, and Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf.

The Al-Diwaniyah Refinery Expansion Project reflects the government’s plan to invest in domestic infrastructure. The Prime Minister praised the engineers and technicians involved. He emphasized that Diwaniyah Province needs more major developments like this one.

Al-Sudani stated that the expansion will increase job opportunities and boost the local economy. He also highlighted how these projects help train young Iraqis. They will gain hands-on experience and contribute to Iraq’s long-term energy goals.

In addition, The $800 million project includes advanced refining and processing units. These include a gas processing unit with a daily capacity of 180 tons. It also has a gasoline improvement unit with a 10,000-barrel capacity.

Other facilities include a white oil unit, a gas oil unit, and a fuel oil unit. Additional infrastructure includes an 8,000-barrel naphtha isomerization unit and an 18,000-barrel hydrotreating unit. Storage systems, power units, and nitrogen production are also part of the project.

Al-Sudani expressed full confidence in Iraq’s private sector. He believes it plays a vital role in strategic development. He also reaffirmed trust in national capabilities to deliver joint ventures successfully.

In conclusion, the Al-Diwaniyah Refinery Expansion Project stands as a milestone in Iraq’s path toward energy independence and economic resilience.
