Iraq-France Partnership Strengthens with Strategic Talks at UN Ocean Conference

Baghdad – The Iraq-France partnership took a significant step forward as Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid arrived in France on Sunday. He attended the United Nations Ocean Conference, a major global event addressing marine pollution, climate resilience, and sustainable ocean management. This key phrase, Iraq-France partnership, sets the tone for the growing collaboration between the two nations.

At the conference, President Rashid is expected to meet French President Emmanuel Macron for high-level talks. Their discussions will likely focus on expanding environmental cooperation, infrastructure projects, and reviewing existing agreements. An Iraqi official familiar with the visit said both sides aim to strengthen ties across various sectors.

Earlier on Sunday, President Rashid highlighted Iraq’s strong desire to deepen the Iraq-France partnership. He emphasized cooperation not only in environmental fields but also in political and economic spheres. Moreover, Rashid reaffirmed Iraq’s neutral stance in international affairs. He described strategic partnerships like the one with France as essential for advancing the country’s economic reforms.

The visit builds on earlier meetings, including the March discussion between Macron and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. During that meeting, they reviewed the $17 billion Development Road project. This ambitious initiative plans to connect Asia and Europe through Iraq, potentially creating up to one million jobs. Clearly, the Iraq-France partnership is vital for such large-scale projects.

Since 2023, Iraq and France have signed several agreements in energy, defense, and transportation. These deals show a growing commitment to joint development. Additionally, Baghdad is preparing to host an Iraq–France business forum soon. This event aims to boost private sector links and attract new investments from French companies.

In summary, the Iraq-France partnership is gaining momentum through strategic dialogues and projects. The United Nations Ocean Conference provides a timely platform for leaders to advance shared goals. Both countries appear eager to work together, focusing on sustainable growth, infrastructure development, and environmental stewardship.
