In a strategic effort to enhance sanitation and strengthen public health, Iraq has signed two significant financing agreements with France’s Agence Française de Développement (AFD). These agreements, worth a combined €130 million, reflect a growing commitment to Sanitation Infrastructure Development.
On Tuesday, Iraqi Finance Minister Taif Sami Mohammed signed the deals in Baghdad. The French ambassador also attended the signing, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation between Iraq and France.
The funding will directly support two large-scale wastewater treatment projects in underserved areas. The first project, valued at €110 million, includes a €30 million supplementary loan. It will fund the expansion of the Khalidiya sewage system in Al Anbar Governorate.
Meanwhile, the second agreement allocates €100 million for the new Hamza sewer system in Diwaniya Province. These developments aim to improve sanitation services and raise the standard of living for residents in both regions.
AFD has maintained an active presence in Iraq since 2011. To date, the agency has invested approximately €600 million in public service and commercial infrastructure projects. These new agreements represent the latest milestone in Iraq’s partnership with France on Sanitation Infrastructure Development.
Officials emphasized that these investments will provide long-term benefits for the population. By addressing sewage issues in low-income communities, the projects will help reduce health risks and protect the environment. Improved sanitation systems are expected to create cleaner neighborhoods and more sustainable living conditions.
Moreover, the agreements underline France’s continued support for Iraq’s national development goals. Through financial and technical collaboration, the two countries are building a foundation for more resilient infrastructure.
Both sides reaffirmed their shared vision for cleaner, safer cities in Iraq. As work begins on these projects, they are expected to create jobs and stimulate local economies as well.
