Dust Storm Hits Southern Iraq, Causing Respiratory Issues and Injuries

A powerful dust storm has swept through southern Iraq, causing widespread respiratory distress and physical injuries across multiple cities. The Basra Health Directorate reported 363 cases of breathing difficulties. Patients sought treatment at various medical centers throughout the city. As the storm continued into Friday, emergency units remained on high alert to handle the ongoing crisis.

Earlier this week, another dust storm led to over 190 similar cases in Basra and Najaf. The medical community has been working tirelessly to manage the influx of patients. Health officials urged the public to take precautions and avoid outdoor activities to minimize exposure.

In Kirkuk, the storm’s intensity caused a large billboard to collapse on Baghdad Street, injuring four pedestrians. Local health authorities described the storm as so intense that visibility dropped to almost zero. “The billboard collapsed unexpectedly due to the storm’s force,” a local health official told Shafaq News. The injured individuals, who sustained minor to moderate injuries, were quickly transported to Kirkuk General Hospital for treatment.

Authorities in Kirkuk have launched an investigation to assess the incident. They aim to evaluate the safety measures in place for billboard installations, considering the storm’s unexpected force.

The dust storm, which began earlier this week, has significantly impacted multiple provinces. Basra, Dhi Qar, Diwaniya, Babil, Wasit, and Najaf have all experienced severe weather conditions. As a result, the General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring issued several warnings about reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions. They specifically advised travelers to exercise caution, especially on highways, due to the ongoing dust storms.

The storm continues to affect daily life in southern Iraq. The community is urged to stay indoors and remain vigilant. As the situation develops, health officials remain prepared to handle additional cases.
