Iraqi Delegation Visits Syria for Strategic Talks

Baghdad – An official Iraqi government delegation arrived in Damascus on Friday, following directives from the Prime Minister, to engage in high-level discussions with Syrian leadership and key officials responsible for religious sites.

The delegation, led by the head of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, Hamid al-Shatri, held talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and several government representatives. Discussions focused on enhancing joint efforts to combat terrorism, bolstering border security to prevent potential threats or violations, increasing trade cooperation, and exploring the revival of the oil pipeline project linking Iraq to Mediterranean ports through Syrian territory.

A senior member of the delegation emphasized that the Syrian President expressed willingness to collaborate across various sectors. The Iraqi side reaffirmed its support for Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and stability, noting the direct impact of Syria’s security on Iraq and the broader region.

The delegation also met with officials overseeing religious shrines in Syria, conveying the Prime Minister’s concern and Iraq’s solidarity with the Syrian people across all communities. During the visit, the Iraqi representatives paid respects at the shrine of Al-Sayyida Zainab (peace be upon her).

The delegation included representatives from the Interior Ministry’s Border Forces Command, as well as officials from the Ministries of Oil, Trade, and the Border Ports Authority.
