Iraq, Spain Sign Security Deal as Bilateral Ties Deepen

Baghdad – Iraq and Spain signed a wide-ranging agreement on Wednesday to strengthen cooperation in the field of security and crime control, as Iraq, Spain sign security deal under the sponsorship of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

The signing ceremony, held in Baghdad, was attended by senior officials from both countries. Iraq’s Minister of Interior Abdul Amir al-Shammari signed on behalf of the Iraqi government, while Spanish Minister of Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska signed for Spain.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the agreement reflects the shared goal of both nations to deepen bilateral relations. Iraq, Spain sign security deal not only to improve security ties but also to enhance joint efforts in fighting crime and terrorism.

The agreement covers a broad range of issues, including counter-terrorism, combating organized crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, extortion, and other serious offenses. Both sides agreed to share expertise, exchange critical information, and collaborate on criminal investigations.

The pact also includes provisions for technical and scientific assistance, as well as the deployment of specialized teams between the two countries. Officials said the focus will be on modern investigative tools and crime-fighting technologies.

During the event, Prime Minister al-Sudani welcomed the Spanish delegation and received a message of goodwill from the Spanish Prime Minister. Marlaska conveyed his country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Iraq.

Prime Minister al-Sudani highlighted the progress in bilateral ties since his official visit to Madrid last November. He emphasized the importance of continued partnership, particularly in security and transportation.

As Iraq, Spain sign security deal, both countries see the agreement as a foundation for long-term collaboration. Leaders from both sides view this as a strategic step toward building safer, more resilient societies through mutual trust and coordinated action.
