Iraq’s New Initiative to Ensure Fair Bread Prices and Food Security

The Ministry of Trade has launched a wide campaign to monitor bakeries and ovens across Baghdad and the provinces. This move comes as part of a broader effort to ensure price stability and improve food security.

Riyadh Mahdi Al-Mousawi, Director General of the Department of Commercial and Financial Control, announced the new initiative. He said that all monitoring teams in Baghdad and other provinces received clear directives. These directives instruct them to visit bakeries and ovens regularly to verify compliance with official trade regulations.

Officials emphasized that bakeries must follow pricing guidelines and operate under the Ministry’s approved standards. Al-Mousawi stated that the inspections will help ensure the availability of bread to citizens at fair prices. He also stressed the importance of preventing price manipulation in this essential sector.

Moreover, the Ministry coordinated closely with security and health agencies to support these monitoring efforts. The joint teams recorded numerous violations during their field visits. Authorities took immediate legal action against those who failed to follow the rules.

This campaign reflects the government’s broader strategy to reinforce bread market oversight. The Ministry continues to call on the public to assist in identifying violators. Citizens can report infractions via the hotline or through the “Watch Me” online platform.

Officials believe that involving the public will significantly strengthen the campaign’s impact. They also aim to reduce corruption and ensure fairness in the distribution of basic goods. Bread remains a critical staple in the Iraqi diet, and maintaining its affordability is a key goal.

In conclusion, the Ministry confirmed its ongoing commitment to maintaining strict bread market oversight. Through cooperation with security forces and the public, officials hope to create a more transparent and accountable food supply system. Iraq’s efforts to improve bread market oversight demonstrate a growing focus on economic justice and food security for all.
