Iraq and Turkey Strengthen Cooperation Amid Regional Developments

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to collaborating with regional partners, particularly Turkey, in addressing recent geopolitical developments.

During a meeting on Sunday with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, the two officials discussed bilateral relations and key regional and international issues, with a strong focus on the latest developments in Syria, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Their discussions also covered the ongoing crises in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the need to uphold ceasefire efforts and promote stability.

Fidan’s visit to Baghdad comes as part of broader diplomatic engagements following recent meetings between Al-Sudani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Turkish foreign minister stressed Ankara’s interest in maintaining close coordination with Iraq on regional affairs, reinforcing the commitment to stronger bilateral ties.

Highlighting the growing cooperation between the two nations, Fidan reiterated Turkey’s support for Iraq’s Development Road project. He also underscored the importance of the memoranda of understanding signed between Baghdad and Ankara across various sectors, including energy, education, trade, and banking, as key pillars of future collaboration.
