Iraq Successfully Secures Release of Five Detained Migrants in Libya

Baghdad, Iraq – On Thursday, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Iraq in Libya, announced that five Iraqis detained in Libya for illegal migration had been released. This achievement follows three months of intensive efforts by the Iraqi Embassy in Tripoli, in collaboration with the Government of National Unity in Libya.

Al-Sahaf explained that the individuals had entered Libya illegally with the intention of migrating to Europe. The Embassy, after coordinating with Libyan authorities, provided medical assistance, housing, and laissez-passer passports to facilitate their voluntary return to Iraq.

The embassy had previously succeeded in securing the release of numerous Iraqi migrants throughout 2024 and early 2025, and continues to prioritize voluntary returns. It has also issued a warning to young Iraqis about the risks of illegal migration and the networks that jeopardize their safety, encouraging vigilance to prevent further exploitation.
