Iraq Ranks 37th Globally for Pollution in 2025

Iraq has been ranked 37th globally for pollution in the 2025 Pollution Index, according to a report by Numbeo. The country scored 71.5 out of 100, positioning it 6th among Arab nations in terms of pollution levels. This ranking highlights the environmental challenges Iraq faces in addressing pollution, which is a growing concern for public health and quality of life.

Pollution Levels in the Arab World

In the Arab world, Lebanon recorded the highest pollution level, with a score of 89.4, followed by Egypt (82.7), Jordan (77.1), Syria (74.9), and Bahrain (71.6). Iraq, with its score of 71.5, ranks just behind Bahrain, reflecting the increasing pollution challenges the region faces due to rapid urbanization, industrial activities, and conflicts that have exacerbated environmental degradation.

Global Context

On the global scale, Cameroon was ranked as the most polluted country, scoring 93.7. Other countries with high pollution levels include Myanmar (89.8), Lebanon (89.4), Nigeria (87.9), and Mongolia (87.4). These nations share common environmental issues such as industrial pollution, deforestation, and inadequate waste management.

The Least Polluted Countries

At the other end of the spectrum, Finland and Iceland were ranked as the least polluted countries globally, with scores of 11.8 and 16, respectively. These countries benefit from strong environmental policies, a commitment to sustainability, and relatively low levels of industrialization compared to other nations.

The Road Ahead for Iraq

Iraq’s pollution score is a reflection of ongoing environmental challenges, including air pollution, water contamination, and the effects of conflict. The country faces significant hurdles in improving its environmental conditions, but continued investment in sustainable development, energy reforms, and pollution control measures could help improve Iraq’s pollution ranking in the future.
