Iraq’s PM and French President Macron Highlight Key Areas for Collaboration

Baghdad, Iraq – Prime Minister Muhammed S. Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation with France across various sectors.

In a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, the two leaders discussed several mutual interests and agreed on collaborative efforts to promote stability and prevent further regional escalation, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s media office.

During the call, both leaders confirmed plans to establish a bilateral team to set a date for President Macron’s upcoming visit to Baghdad. They also explored the possibility of holding the third edition of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership.

The discussion covered the evolving political situation in Syria, with both parties agreeing that any new political process must reflect social diversity. They stressed the importance of combating terrorism and extremism, as well as advancing a pluralistic and inclusive political framework.

The leaders also touched on the need to stabilize Lebanon, support reconstruction efforts in Gaza, uphold the current truce, and prevent any escalation resulting from violations of the ceasefire agreement.

Regarding regional matters, they agreed on the importance of joint coordination to maintain stability and avoid further tensions, particularly in relation to the situation with Iran. They emphasized the necessity of resolving differences through dialogue to avert any risk of escalation.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s eagerness to deepen cooperation with France, particularly in the economic and cultural sectors, highlighting the significant projects being led by French companies and the potential for further expansion following the French President’s visit to Iraq.

In response, President Macron expressed his country’s commitment to continuing cooperation with Iraq across various domains, emphasizing France’s readiness to work together in combating terrorism, a global threat that also affects both local and regional security, and commended Iraq’s efforts in counterterrorism.
