Iraq’s Commitment to Sustainable Water Management and Environmental Protection

Baghadad, Iraq- On Thursday, Minister of Environment Hevlo Al-Askari affirmed the government’s commitment to adopting an integrated approach for the proper and responsible management of water resources. He emphasized that water resource management is a national priority, vital for environmental sustainability, reducing waste, and preventing pollution.

Al-Askari stated that the government is focused on developing a comprehensive strategy for the sustainable management of water resources. This strategy aims to contribute to sustainable development and improve the overall environmental situation. He further explained that preventing water wastage and pollution is essential, especially as the country faces challenges leading up to the summer season.

To address these concerns, the government has endorsed a national strategy to reduce pollution. This strategy provides a framework to tackle environmental challenges and is crucial for ensuring safe and clean water for future generations. The Ministry of Environment is working closely with various other ministries, including those of water resources, agriculture, and municipalities, to meet these goals.

The Minister also mentioned the critical need to improve the quality of drinking water and ensure sufficient water supply for agriculture. In addition, local governments are collaborating with the Ministry to address these growing concerns. As summer approaches, the demand for water increases, making efficient water resource management more urgent.

The Ministry is also focused on supporting sewage treatment projects, promoting sustainable agriculture, and expanding community awareness programs on water conservation. These efforts align with Iraq’s national vision to protect the environment, ensure sustainable use of natural resources, and raise awareness among public and private institutions. The ultimate goal is to tackle water scarcity, rising temperatures, and the effects of climate change.

Al-Askari concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to addressing these pressing environmental issues through coordinated efforts and comprehensive strategies. The Ministry continues to push for long-term solutions to secure water sustainability for future generations.
