Iraq Revives Long-Delayed Plan to Remove Zeros From Dinar

Iraq currency reform has returned to the spotlight after Communications Minister Mustafa Sanad announced plans to remove zeros from the Iraqi dinar.

Sanad said Iraq had decided to remove zeros and reprint its currency. However, the Central Bank of Iraq has not announced a timetable for the move.

The minister made the remarks during an interview on Sunday. He said the currency would soon undergo changes and receive newly printed banknotes.

The announcement could revive a proposal discussed by Iraqi authorities for more than a decade. However, questions remain about its timing and implementation.

The Central Bank remains responsible for Iraq’s monetary policy. Therefore, any major currency change would require its involvement and formal approval.

The bank has not publicly confirmed a specific date for removing zeros. Moreover, it has previously warned against inaccurate claims surrounding currency-related measures.

Removing zeros would amount to a currency redenomination. The process would change the numerical denominations printed on banknotes.

However, it would not automatically increase the dinar’s purchasing power. Instead, authorities would adjust prices and financial values proportionally.

For example, removing three zeros could turn 1,000 old dinars into one new dinar. Prices, wages and bank deposits would receive the same adjustment.

Therefore, the measure would differ from a currency devaluation. It would also differ from a revaluation intended to increase the currency’s value.

The Central Bank has previously discussed removing zeros as an administrative reform. Such a move could simplify accounting and reduce cash-handling difficulties.

Furthermore, the reform could support efforts to modernize Iraq’s banking sector. Authorities have also pursued stronger connections with international banking networks.

The renewed discussion comes as Iraq works to modernize its cash-heavy economy. Meanwhile, the country continues to face significant fiscal and monetary pressures.

Iraq remains heavily dependent on oil revenues. Consequently, government finances remain vulnerable to changes in oil prices and production.

Large cash transactions also remain common throughout the economy. As a result, handling high-denomination payments can create practical challenges.

A redenomination could simplify accounting and financial reporting. It could also encourage more citizens to use formal banking channels.

However, the measure alone would not strengthen the dinar. Its success would depend on wider economic and banking reforms.

Any redenomination would require extensive preparation from Iraqi institutions. Authorities would need to coordinate the printing and distribution of new banknotes.

They would also need clear conversion rules and transition periods. Banks and businesses would then need time to update their systems.

Government agencies would face similar adjustments across financial records and contracts. Additionally, authorities would need a major public information campaign.

The informal cash economy could create further challenges during the transition. Authorities would also need safeguards against counterfeit money and illicit funds.

Political coordination would prove equally important. The Central Bank, Finance Ministry, Parliament and other institutions would need to work together.

Iraq currency reform also comes as the country pursues wider banking reforms. The Central Bank has been restructuring commercial and Islamic banks.

Foreign bank branches have also faced new compliance and governance requirements. Some institutions have considered mergers, independence or leaving the market.

Meanwhile, authorities continue efforts to expand international banking access. These reforms could become important if Iraq changes its currency.

Reprinting banknotes alone would not resolve weaknesses within the financial system. Iraq would also need stronger banking infrastructure and greater public confidence.

Sanad’s statement has renewed attention around Iraq’s long-discussed currency proposal. Still, the Central Bank’s position remains crucial.

The key issue now concerns whether implementation will actually begin. Officials must clarify the timetable, conversion process and role of each institution.

For Iraqis, the impact will depend on more than fewer zeros. Monetary stability, banking confidence and transparent rules will matter most.

Until authorities provide those details, the announcement remains a major policy signal. It does not yet represent an immediate change in the dinar’s value.
