Drone attack on KDPI base has once again raised concerns about security in the Kurdistan Region. Two drones struck a facility belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Erbil’s Degala sub-district late Wednesday. Although the strike caused no casualties, it marked another incident in a growing series of attacks targeting Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.
A KDPI member confirmed the incident shortly after the attack. According to the party official, two drones targeted the organization’s base in Degala within a short period.
The official stated that no Peshmerga fighters were present when the drones struck. Consequently, the attack caused no injuries or fatalities. However, the incident renewed concerns over the continued targeting of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups operating inside the Kurdistan Region.
The latest drone attack on KDPI base comes despite an ongoing ceasefire between Iran and the United States. Although tensions between the two countries have eased in recent weeks, security incidents inside the Kurdistan Region continue to occur.
Iran has repeatedly targeted the headquarters and refugee camps of Iranian Kurdish opposition parties based in northern Iraq. Moreover, these operations have continued even after military confrontations between Iran, the United States, and Israel declined.
According to figures tracked by Rudaw, nearly 20 drones have targeted refugee camps and headquarters belonging to Iranian Kurdish political groups during the past month alone. Those incidents have affected several locations across the Kurdistan Region.
Regional security concerns have remained high since late February. At that time, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale aerial campaign against Iran. The operation struck thousands of military and strategic targets during six weeks of fighting.
Iran responded with thousands of drones and missiles targeting what it described as American assets across the Middle East. At the same time, Tehran increased pressure on Iranian Kurdish armed groups based in the Kurdistan Region.
Iranian authorities have long accused those groups of threatening security along the country’s western border. Officials fear armed factions could exploit regional instability to launch attacks or encourage unrest in Kurdish areas inside Iran.
Although fighting between Iran and the United States later subsided, attacks inside the Kurdistan Region continued. Furthermore, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June to reinforce a ceasefire framework first introduced in April. Nevertheless, isolated security incidents have persisted.
According to Rudaw’s records, at least 865 drones and missiles have struck the Kurdistan Region since late February. That figure continues to increase as additional attacks occur across different locations.
Meanwhile, local authorities continue monitoring the security situation closely. Officials have not announced responsibility for Wednesday night’s strike. However, investigators are expected to examine the attack and assess the damage.
The latest drone attack on KDPI base underscores the fragile security environment facing the Kurdistan Region. Despite diplomatic efforts and ceasefire agreements, drone strikes continue to threaten opposition groups and raise concerns about regional stability.
