Baghdad, Iraq- A senior US official is expected to visit Baghdad in the near future to discuss the ongoing US presence in Iraq, according to an Iraqi government source. The visit, which is currently being planned, will focus on a range of issues, including the US military’s role in Iraq and broader regional developments.
The government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that special preparations are underway for the visit. Key topics for discussion will include the US presence in Iraq, as well as the evolving political and security landscape in the region, particularly in light of recent developments in Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza.
During the visit, the US official is also expected to engage in talks aimed at restructuring the relationship between the United States and Iraq. This will include discussions on security and defense agreements, as well as matters related to Iraq’s financial and economic ties with the US, particularly in regard to the US Federal Reserve.
Notably, Baghdad and Washington had previously agreed on a plan for the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces by September 2025. However, with the shifting dynamics in the region, particularly following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, there is growing speculation that Iraq may request an extension for the stay of US forces. US media reports have suggested that the evolving security situation in neighboring countries may prompt Iraq to reconsider its withdrawal timeline.
