U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson Urges Sanctions on Iraq’s Rafidain Bank
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Joe Wilson has called on the U.S. Department of the Treasury to impose immediate sanctions on Iraq’s Rafidain Bank, accusing it of laundering billions of dollars for Iraqi militias.
In a post on his official X account, Wilson also criticized Iraq’s Minister of Finance, Taif Sami, alleging that she is depriving the Kurdistan Region of its rightful budget and failing to pay Kurdish salaries.
“No more delay by USTreasury to sanction Iraq’s Rafidain Bank – laundering billions for Iraqi militias while Iraq’s Minister of Finance @Alltyf_ is starving Iraqi Kurds and not paying their salaries. This must end. Trump will fix it,” Wilson stated.
The remarks come amid growing tensions over financial disputes between Baghdad and Erbil. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has repeatedly accused the federal government of withholding funds, causing economic hardship in the region.
Wilson’s statement signals increasing pressure from U.S. lawmakers on the Biden administration to take action against financial institutions linked to corruption and militia funding in Iraq.
