Military Coordination and Counterterrorism Take Center Stage in Barzani-Yarallah Security Talks

Military coordination and counterterrorism dominated a critical meeting on Tuesday in Erbil. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received a top-level Iraqi security delegation led by Army Chief of Staff Abdul-Amir Yarallah. The two sides discussed military collaboration, anti-terror strategies, and Iraq’s security future beyond the U.S.-led coalition mission.

Discussions between the Kurdish leadership and Baghdad’s military delegation were extensive. Specifically, they covered cooperation between the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces. Both sides acknowledged the vital role of the U.S.-led Global Coalition in fighting ISIS. President Barzani emphasized that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region still need coalition support. He stated clearly that continued international assistance is necessary to combat remaining terrorist threats.

Yarallah called the current cooperation between the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces the strongest to date. He urged even greater unity and practical coordination going forward. Both sides agreed to enhance joint operations, information sharing, and field deployment. This partnership remains a crucial barrier against ISIS resurgence in vulnerable regions.

The dialogue also explored future steps after the coalition’s mission officially ends in September 2026. U.S. forces, which currently number around 2,500 in Iraq, are preparing for a phased withdrawal. Most are expected to leave key locations like Baghdad and Ain al-Asad Airbase by late 2025. Some troops will reportedly reposition to Erbil in the Kurdistan Region.

Security officials also reviewed Iraq’s border with Syria. Cross-border smuggling and ISIS infiltration remain top concerns. The U.S.-Iraqi alliance is set to shift from combat roles to advisory and technical support roles. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani recently confirmed this limited American presence.

Meanwhile, the delegation tackled preparations for Iraq’s upcoming legislative elections. Scheduled concurrently for November 11, the vote presents serious security challenges. Deputy Commander Qais al-Muhammadawi led these efforts. He currently chairs Iraq’s Supreme Committee for Election Security. He confirmed the mission’s goal to protect polling stations and secure border crossings.

Before meeting President Barzani, the security team met with Erbil Governor Omed Xoshnaw. They also planned talks with Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani and Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed. These meetings are aimed at deepening trust and reinforcing coordination at multiple levels.

Though ISIS lost territory in 2017, its threat remains. The extremist group continues to carry out ambushes, bombings, and kidnappings. Disputed territories between Erbil and Baghdad often face the most danger. This makes military coordination and counterterrorism efforts essential for long-term stability.

The Erbil meeting marked a strategic step toward a unified Iraqi security strategy. With joint planning, stronger partnerships, and international support, Iraq hopes to secure a peaceful future. But the road ahead will require continued vigilance and cooperation on all fronts.
