Reports indicate that Kurdish farmers in the Sargaran subdistrict of Kirkuk experienced restrictions on their land use on Monday. Local sources stated that Iraqi military forces were present in the area and prevented farmers from plowing their fields.
A representative for the farmers in Sargaran stated, “We wanted to begin plowing…but the army extended its restrictions.” The representative indicated that the military cited a lack of new directives authorizing cultivation as the reason for denying access.
This situation arises following recent legislative actions by Iraqi lawmakers, including the passage of the Personal Status Law, the Property Restitution Law, and the General Amnesty Law. The Property Restitution Law addresses the return of homes and lands in disputed areas, particularly Kirkuk, to Kurdish and Turkmen families displaced during the Baath regime. These displacements resulted in the reassignment of properties to Arab settlers.
