Iraq’s Parliamentary Elections: Campaigning Officially Begins for Over 7,000 Candidates

Iraq’s parliamentary elections are approaching fast, and the campaign season officially begins this Friday. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) confirmed that 7,800 approved candidates will start campaigning on October 3.

IHEC spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai spoke to Rudaw on Wednesday. She said candidates can promote their platforms until the general vote on November 11. A special voting day will take place on November 10 for security personnel, displaced individuals, and those with special needs.

Initially, 8,500 people submitted their candidacies. IHEC disqualified nearly 800 of them. The commission said 370 candidates lost eligibility due to alleged connections with the Baath Party. That party ruled Iraq from 1968 until the U.S.-led invasion removed Saddam Hussein in 2003.

However, 74 disqualified candidates successfully appealed and re-entered the race by last Friday. The appeals process continues to give rejected individuals a second chance.

Iraqis will vote for 329 seats in parliament. The system includes 320 general seats and nine reserved for minority communities. Thousands of candidates now aim to reach voters through rallies, media appearances, and direct outreach.

IHEC warned candidates not to start campaigning early or violate the code of conduct. The commission investigates violations through its cybersecurity team. If needed, it sends serious cases to the Iraqi National Security Service (INSS).

One major case has already surfaced. Saja al-Bayati, a candidate from the Tafawuq Alliance, lost her eligibility after another MP submitted photos and videos against her. The evidence allegedly showed her violating campaign rules. Al-Bayati claimed the materials were fake and created using AI technology.

Iraq’s recent census in February revealed a population of 46.1 million across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Of that number, about 27 million Iraqis are eligible to vote, provided they are at least 19 years old.

However, IHEC stressed that only voters with biometric cards can cast their ballots. These cards help reduce fraud and confirm voter identities during Iraq’s parliamentary elections.

As the campaign period begins, candidates will work hard to win support from Iraq’s diverse population. They will visit cities, towns, and villages to share their visions for the country’s future.

Iraq’s parliamentary elections represent more than a political event. They offer a chance to shape Iraq’s next chapter. With millions preparing to vote, the election season promises energy, debate, and major political shifts.
