Iraq Restricts Animal Movement to Control Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Iraq Restricts Animal Movement policy is now in effect to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The Veterinary Department, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, announced strict preventive measures on Monday. These steps aim to control the contagious disease by limiting animal movement across all provinces.

Thamer Habib Hamza Al-Khafaji, the department’s director general, said authorities have increased epidemiological surveillance. This move follows recent reports from Turkey, where all animal markets were closed due to outbreaks. Consequently, Iraq has contacted the Kurdistan Regional Government to block animal and product imports from Turkey through all border crossings.

Moreover, vehicles entering Iraq from Turkish borders must undergo disinfection using antiviral agents. These precautions help prevent the virus from crossing into Iraqi territory. The ministry has also instructed veterinary hospitals in Nineveh, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, and Diyala to boost monitoring efforts.

Veterinary centers in these provinces must immediately report any suspected foot-and-mouth disease cases. In addition, animal movement within all provinces now requires an official veterinary health certificate. This regulation helps track and reduce disease transmission.

Samples of suspicious cases will be sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratories and Research Department for thorough analysis. This approach ensures fast detection and effective response to any outbreaks. Furthermore, the veterinary authorities emphasize ongoing surveillance and strict control measures.

Overall, the Iraq Restricts Animal Movement strategy reflects the government’s commitment to animal health and public safety. By implementing these preventive steps, Iraq aims to minimize the disease’s impact on livestock and agriculture. The enhanced vigilance and cooperation among border and veterinary officials remain vital in protecting the nation’s animal resources.

The Veterinary Department also plans awareness campaigns to educate farmers about the disease. These campaigns will emphasize early detection and hygiene measures. Furthermore, the ministry encourages cooperation among local authorities and livestock owners. Together, these efforts aim to safeguard Iraq’s agricultural economy and ensure the health of its animal populations.
