Iraq Pushes for Global Reengagement

Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized that Iraq remains unfairly listed as a high-risk travel destination. He argued this label discourages foreign investment and restricts tourism. Moreover, it hinders cultural exchange and slows economic recovery. He said Iraq deserves a more accurate global image based on current conditions.

Hussein made these remarks during his meeting with U.S. Senators Angus King and James Lankford in Baghdad. He used the opportunity to outline Iraq’s push for global reengagement and invite American companies to join Iraq’s transformation.

The minister highlighted the country’s plan to achieve energy self-sufficiency. Iraq is now using associated gas more efficiently. It is also expanding electricity connections with neighboring countries. In addition, the country is exploring untapped gas fields to meet domestic demand.

He urged American firms to invest in Iraq’s energy sector. Iraq is no longer just an oil exporter. It is preparing to become a regional gas producer as well. This shift offers attractive opportunities for energy companies looking for growth.

Beyond energy, Hussein discussed broader Iraqi-American relations. He noted the strength of strategic cooperation between the two countries. These partnerships include counterterrorism, education, development, and regional stability. He added that rebuilding Iraq requires strong international alliances.

The minister called for more U.S. businesses to enter Iraq’s market. He explained that foreign partnerships can help rebuild critical infrastructure and create long-term development. Iraq wants allies to support its vision for peace and growth.

During the meeting, both sides also addressed the ongoing threat posed by ISIS. They agreed that international coordination remains essential to prevent the group’s resurgence. Together, they stressed the need for continued security cooperation.

Finally, Hussein welcomed ongoing dialogue between the U.S. and Iran. He said diplomacy supports stability and limits conflict. Dialogue, he emphasized, remains the best path forward.

Iraq’s push for global reengagement reflects its desire for renewed international cooperation. The country hopes to shape a future based on peace, investment, and shared progress.
