Iraq Green-lights Waste-to-Energy Project in Baghdad

Baghdad, Iraq- The Iraqi Council of Ministers has officially approved the Waste-to-Energy Power Generation Project in Nahrawan, Baghdad. The project has been awarded to the Chinese company Shanghai SUS Environment and is expected to be completed within two years, with a 25-year investment term.

The National Investment Commission (NIC) will issue the necessary investment license and finalize the contract, ensuring the project’s smooth progression.

As part of the agreement, the Baghdad Municipality will provide 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste daily and allocate the required land within the next six months. The energy purchase fee will be determined based on the recommendations of a committee, which will take into account landfill, environmental, and public health costs. The Ministries of Health, Electricity, Environment, and the Baghdad Municipality will oversee the payment processes.

Under the terms of the project, the Ministry of Electricity will be responsible for purchasing the energy generated, initially capping the output at 100 MW. Should the project exceed this capacity, further negotiations will be necessary. The Ministry of Finance is tasked with providing the required funding, while the Ministry of Electricity is authorized to sign the power purchase agreement.
