Erbil expands green space with five new public parks

Erbil expands green space with five new parks as authorities push forward with major construction projects in the city center. These parks will cover 200 dunams, equal to nearly 50 acres, and aim to improve sustainability while enhancing urban life.

The Erbil governorate plans to plant nearly 40,000 trees across the new parks. This effort reflects a broader vision to increase greenery and promote environmental health in the city. Furthermore, officials noted that most of the projects are progressing on schedule.

The largest park, located near 120-Meter Street, covers 80 dunams and will feature around 8,000 trees. Construction is already 70% complete.Rashkin Park spans 47 dunams and will include 16,000 trees. Officials have completed half of the construction work.

In the Nazdar neighborhood, a smaller park covering four dunams is expected to host 6,000 trees. Work there is 80% complete. Another park on Zhyan Street spans seven dunams and will contain 5,000 trees. Construction on that site is also 70% finished. A fifth project on 150-Meter Street will cover 60 dunams, though development is still underway.

Currently, Erbil has 26 large parks and 204 smaller gardens, according to the governorate. With the addition of these five parks, the city will strengthen its reputation as one of Iraq’s greenest urban centers.

Moreover, in January, the Directorate of Parks and Gardens launched a wider initiative to plant 200,000 trees and flowers throughout 2025. The plan seeks to expand greenery and fight environmental degradation. As a result, green coverage in Erbil’s urban core has now reached 20%, showing steady progress toward sustainability.

These ongoing projects reflect the government’s long-term commitment to balancing development with environmental care. Officials believe that expanding parks will not only improve air quality but also provide more public spaces for families and communities.

Ultimately, Erbil expands green space with five new parks in a move that combines urban growth with environmental responsibility. By investing in thousands of trees and acres of greenery, the city is setting a model for sustainable urban planning in the region.
