Candidate Disqualifications Rise Ahead of Iraq’s Elections

Candidate disqualifications are increasing rapidly as Iraq approaches its November 11 parliamentary elections. On Sunday, informed sources confirmed that the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) will release new lists of excluded candidates. These additions could push the total number of disqualified individuals beyond 1,000.

According to sources speaking to Shafaq News, the upcoming exclusions will include two main groups. First, candidates accused of forging academic credentials. Second, individuals involved in ongoing criminal investigations. These developments come after weeks of growing scrutiny over the integrity of the election process.

Since candidate registration opened, IHEC has published multiple rounds of exclusion lists. These removals are based on several factors, including the Accountability and Justice Law. Other candidates were disqualified due to confirmed criminal records or unresolved legal violations.

Imad Jamil, Head of IHEC’s Media Team, confirmed the current number of disqualified candidates has reached 751. He emphasized that these decisions followed official investigations by the Board of Commissioners. Many of the affected candidates face accusations of corruption, criminal activity, or past misconduct.

Moreover, Jamil emphasized that IHEC values transparency and will maintain open communication throughout the electoral process. He stated that the commission will continue vetting candidates during the pre-election period to ensure fairness. The commission plans to base each decision on legal standards and aims to strengthen public trust in the process.

As the election date approaches, political tensions continue to escalate. Critics accuse certain political groups of using exclusions for their own gain. Others argue that IHEC has failed to ensure proper oversight and transparency. Despite these concerns, IHEC officials defend their process and claim they follow strict legal guidelines when disqualifying candidates.

At the same time, many observers believe these candidate disqualifications could shape the political balance in Iraq’s next parliament. With more than 1,000 names potentially excluded, several parties may need to rethink their strategies.

In the coming weeks, IHEC is expected to finalize all exclusion lists. Until then, legal challenges and public debate are likely to intensify. The outcome of these candidate disqualifications will play a crucial role in determining Iraq’s political future.
