Baghdad, Iraq- Iraq’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is receiving a major boost with new efforts to enhance micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Through targeted training, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is supporting the growth of MSMEs, which play a key role in creating jobs for local populations. This initiative specifically targets refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities across the country.
The training program, called “Start and Improve Your Business” (SIYB), is designed to equip entrepreneurs with critical skills to manage their businesses effectively. These skills are vital for improving employment opportunities in regions suffering from instability and economic challenges.
Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the ILO aims to strengthen the MSME sector in Iraq. By providing entrepreneurs with business management training, the program helps foster employment opportunities in both northern and southern Iraq. Partnerships with organizations like the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH have been instrumental in implementing these efforts.
The training program serves as a resource for a wide range of stakeholders. It is specifically tailored to meet the needs of government entities such as the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MoLSA), universities, and private sector organizations. Through this initiative, participants gain hands-on experience in essential business operations, helping both established businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs in Iraq.
As part of the initiative, the SIYB training package includes three key modules: “Generate Your Business Idea,” “Start Your Business,” and “Improve Your Business.” These modules are designed to meet the various stages of business development, from the idea phase to growth and expansion. The content has been customized to reflect local realities in Iraq, including legal, economic, and cultural factors, ensuring that the training is accessible and relevant to all.
To further support this initiative, a 10-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop took place in Erbil. This workshop aimed to build a cadre of skilled trainers who will continue to deliver the SIYB program. These trainers will work directly with entrepreneurs to implement the program, providing ongoing support and consultation to ensure long-term success.
“The training methodology will ensure the sustainability of the program in the future, creating a pool of national trainers who can continue to serve entrepreneurs beyond the project’s duration,” said Maha Kattaa, ILO Country Coordinator in Iraq.
By focusing on sustainable growth and job creation, the SIYB program is part of Iraq’s broader strategy to support MSMEs and foster private sector development. With this program, the ILO is laying the groundwork for a stronger economy, creating more opportunities for vulnerable communities and helping Iraq build a more inclusive economic future.
The ILO’s commitment to MSMEs in Iraq will not only strengthen the local economy but also contribute to creating a more stable and prosperous environment for future generations. The SIYB program will continue to make a lasting impact, ensuring that entrepreneurs have the skills and resources needed to succeed.
