Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has welcomed former US President Donald Trump’s new proposal aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict. He emphasized the importance of lasting peace in the Middle East, a goal he says must guide all involved parties.
In a statement posted on X, Barzani urged all sides to prioritize dialogue. He called for compromise and cooperation to bring peace, security, and prosperity to the region. Barzani also applauded Trump’s leadership and praised the initiative’s ambitious framework.
The plan, unveiled Monday, outlines a multi-step approach to end the nearly two-year war in Gaza. It includes the immediate release of all Israeli hostages within a 72 hours. It also calls for the complete demilitarization of Gaza and the political exclusion of Hamas from the region’s future.
Trump presented the peace proposal during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. During the event, Trump thanked Netanyahu for agreeing to the plan and supporting efforts to end the conflict.
The current war in Gaza erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel. The incursion resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages, according to Israeli sources. Of those hostages, 47 remain in Gaza. Israeli authorities believe that 25 of them may have died.
In retaliation, Israel launched an extensive military campaign across Gaza. The Gaza health ministry reports that more than 66,000 Palestinians have died since the conflict began. The situation has created an urgent need for diplomatic solutions that can bring lasting change.
Barzani’s support adds to growing international backing for Trump’s proposal. Many world leaders have responded positively, signaling broader geopolitical momentum behind the plan.
Despite this, it remains uncertain whether Hamas will accept the terms. The plan does not meet all of Hamas’ core demands, including the formation of a Palestinian state. This unresolved issue continues to fuel skepticism about the plan’s viability.
However, Trump and his allies maintain that the proposal offers the best path forward. They believe it can finally bring lasting peace in the Middle East if all stakeholders commit to its terms.
President Barzani remains optimistic. He encouraged more leaders to adopt constructive approaches that prioritize unity and peace. In his view, the future of the region depends on bold moves toward lasting peace in the Middle East.
