Al-Nasr Coalition Backs Sudani, Skips Iraqi Elections

The Al-Nasr Coalition has officially confirmed it will not participate in Iraq’s parliamentary elections scheduled for November 11. Former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the decision while also declaring support for Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s bid for a second term.

Despite not entering the elections directly, the coalition will remain politically active. Some of its members will run through the National State Forces Alliance. This alliance is part of the larger Coordination Framework, a dominant political bloc composed mainly of Shiite parties.

Al-Abadi explained that the Al-Nasr Coalition will help mobilize votes and offer support to its aligned candidates. He emphasized that their goal is to back trustworthy individuals who can bring stability and reform. The coalition views Sudani as the right leader to continue Iraq’s path forward.

Al-Abadi praised Sudani’s long journey in public service. He noted that Sudani is the first Iraqi prime minister to emerge entirely from within Iraq’s internal administrative structure. His career began as a sub-district governor, then moved to provincial governor, minister, and parliamentary deputy, before rising to prime minister.

The coalition’s decision stems from deeper concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. In a previous statement, the group criticized the elections for being influenced by political money. They also warned that the process lacks legal safeguards, leaving room for vote-buying and manipulation.

Even though it won’t appear on the ballot, the Al-Nasr Coalition aims to influence the outcome. It believes supporting Sudani’s second term is a strategic step for Iraq’s political future. The coalition is focused on reform and stability, not just winning seats.

Meanwhile, Iraqis will head to the polls on November 11. In total, around 30 million citizens are eligible to vote. Across the country, 31 political alliances, 38 parties, and 79 independent candidates will compete in the elections. Specifically, these include 23 general candidates and 56 representing minority communities.

The Al-Nasr Coalition may not contest the elections directly, but its presence and influence remain strong. Its support for Sudani highlights its role in shaping the next phase of Iraqi politics.
