Iraq Water Crisis Eases as Turkey Agrees to Increase Water Flow

Baghdad – The Iraq water crisis has taken a hopeful turn after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan committed to releasing additional water to Iraq. Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani announced this agreement on Tuesday. He revealed that Turkey will immediately release 420 cubic meters of water per second. This move aims to ease drought conditions in southern Iraq.

Additionally, Al-Mashhadani explained that he personally urged Turkish leaders to prioritize Iraq’s water needs. He highlighted the critical importance of increasing the flow from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. These rivers serve as vital lifelines for Iraq’s agricultural and urban areas suffering from water scarcity.

According to a statement from al-Mashhadani’s media office, Erdogan described sharing water as a fraternal duty between the two countries. “Turkiye shares what God has given it with its brothers in Iraq and will not withhold it from them,” Erdogan reportedly said. This statement emphasized the close ties between the neighboring nations.

Besides water issues, al-Mashhadani also pressed Ankara to resolve residency concerns for Iraqis living in Turkey. He urged Turkish officials to ease bureaucratic hurdles and avoid sudden deportations. These measures would improve the lives of many Iraqi expatriates and foster goodwill.

Moreover, al-Mashhadani and his Turkish counterpart discussed expanding economic cooperation. They agreed to support increased Turkish investment in Iraq’s growing market. They also pledged to strengthen parliamentary ties by exchanging expertise and coordinating on international matters.

This latest agreement marks a positive step toward resolving the Iraq water crisis. The increased water flow from Turkey could significantly relieve drought-hit areas in the south. At the same time, enhanced diplomatic and economic collaboration between the two countries promises further regional stability.

As Iraq continues to face severe water challenges, such partnerships play a key role. The commitment from Turkey offers hope for sustainable water management and stronger bilateral relations. Many now watch closely to see how swiftly these promises translate into tangible benefits for Iraqi citizens.
