Nouri al-Maliki Calls for Urgent Reforms: “Iraq Must Be a Strong State”

Baghdad – Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, emphasized that Iraq must be a strong state during a recent statement. His remarks came as the country prepared for the Islamic month of Muharram and the annual Ashura commemoration.

Al-Maliki warned that rising regional tensions could soon affect Iraq directly. He pointed to expanding conflicts that now stretch from Gaza to Lebanon, Syria, and even threaten Iran. In this context, Iraq must be a strong state to protect itself and its people.

He stressed that Iraq’s sovereignty cannot depend on foreign protection or fragile institutions. According to him, true reform demands more than slogans or political maneuvering.

“It must be strategic,” al-Maliki said. “It should address weak institutions, promote justice, improve services, and create jobs.” He emphasized that these goals represent the people’s rights—not political favors.

Moreover, al-Maliki urged the government to conduct a complete review of its military and security forces. He insisted Iraq must ensure they are prepared to maintain order and defend against foreign threats.

He also criticized how the country remains vulnerable due to institutional failures. According to al-Maliki, Iraq must be a strong state, ready to protect its sovereignty and sacred sites.

The former prime minister highlighted the need to align Iraq’s defense capabilities with global powers. However, he stressed that Iraq should not seek dominance or aggression like in the Ba’athist era.

He clarified that strength must serve peace, stability, and the long-term interests of the Iraqi people. Building a powerful state, he noted, ensures freedom from interference and respect on the world stage.

Al-Maliki called on leaders to act with urgency, vision, and unity. He believes Iraq can only advance if its institutions reflect the will and needs of its citizens.

As the region braces for more instability, his message remains clear: Iraq must strengthen itself before it is too late.
