Al-Sudani Pushes for Iraq’s Digital Transformation and Media Oversight

Baghdad – Iraq’s digital transformation took center stage as Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani called for immediate improvements in the media and communications sector. On Thursday, he met with leaders from the Communications and Media Commission to discuss a strategic path forward.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to activate the Commission’s offices across all governorates. He stressed that decentralizing their operations would help improve oversight and public trust. Additionally, he instructed officials to monitor hate speech and sectarian incitement closely.

Furthermore, al-Sudani underscored the importance of aligning with international trends. He cited advancements in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital media as essential areas of focus. Iraq’s digital transformation, he argued, requires a modern strategy that strengthens institutions and enhances transparency.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the value of academic partnerships. He urged collaboration with Iraqi universities and research centers to expand the Commission’s expertise. This, he explained, would help bridge knowledge gaps and promote innovation.

Moreover, al-Sudani emphasized the Commission’s role in supporting the national economy. He called for integrating communication services into the broader economic strategy. These services should contribute to the national budget and improve service quality for citizens.

He also stated that the media sector must reflect the values of citizenship and unity. To achieve that, the government must fight online incitement and maintain national security through effective regulation. Iraq’s digital transformation, according to al-Sudani, depends on media accountability and technological development.

Meanwhile, Commission members outlined their current projects. These include initiatives in information technology, coordination with the Ministry of Communications, and oversight of the fourth mobile phone license. They also discussed technical standards for media content and the need for consistent regulation.

In conclusion, Iraq’s digital transformation remains a top priority. With strategic direction and stronger institutions, Iraq aims to build a secure and forward-looking communications sector.
