Lebanese Prime Minister to Visit Iraq for Oil and Trade Talks

Baghdad, Iraq – Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is set to visit Iraq in the coming days to discuss key issues, including oil supplies, trade relations, and regional developments. According to sources, the two-day visit will involve high-level meetings with Iraqi officials.

The discussions will primarily focus on Lebanon’s continued purchase of Iraqi oil at below-market prices. Given Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, Iraq’s support is crucial for stabilizing the country’s energy sector. The visit will also address economic assistance for Lebanon, particularly in the context of its deteriorating financial situation.

In addition to oil and economic cooperation, the talks will explore collaboration on border security and Syria-related issues. The situation in Gaza and broader regional coordination will also be on the agenda, reflecting the growing importance of regional stability.

This visit follows an invitation extended by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The invitation was delivered on Wednesday by Nida Karim Mujul, Iraq’s chargé d’affaires in Beirut, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

The visit comes shortly after Lebanon reached an agreement with Iraq in March to renew its oil import contract. This deal, which involves switching from fuel oil to crude oil, is seen as essential for Lebanon’s energy needs. However, Iraq has expressed frustration over Lebanon’s failure to release payments owed for previous fuel shipments. These payments are critical for ensuring that Lebanon’s power plants can operate without disruption.

Lebanon’s banking crisis and rapidly depleting foreign reserves have placed immense pressure on the country’s ability to import essential goods like fuel. The collapse of its banking sector has led to severe blackouts and a collapse in public services, making Iraq’s support even more significant. Iraqi oil could help alleviate some of Lebanon’s energy challenges, reducing its dependency on the costly black market.

Prime Minister Salam’s visit underscores the importance of regional cooperation during these turbulent times. Both countries are looking to strengthen ties and find ways to address the pressing challenges they face.
