Justice Ministry Secures Landmark Win in International Compensation Case

The Iraq legal victory marked a major milestone after an international court ruling announced on Sunday. Iraq’s Ministry of Justice confirmed it avoided paying more than 120 million dollars in compensation. The ruling ended a prolonged legal dispute involving an American company. Officials described the outcome as a decisive defense of national interests.

According to an official statement, the ministry defeated a lawsuit filed by the U.S.-based company YOK. The company pursued legal action before American courts. It targeted both the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Defense. The dispute stemmed from claims related to an earlier contract.

Initially, the company demanded 24 million dollars in compensation. Additionally, it sought interest for alleged delayed payments. However, the case escalated significantly in late 2019. On November 15, 2019, a U.S. court issued a preliminary ruling against Iraq.

That ruling obligated Iraq to pay 120,338,399 dollars. Moreover, the court imposed daily penalties of 10,909 dollars. These penalties applied after October 9, 2019. Consequently, Iraq faced mounting financial exposure as delays continued.

However, Iraqi legal teams refused to accept the ruling. They immediately filed an appeal against the judgment. As a result, litigation procedures continued for several years. The appeal successfully halted enforcement of the initial decision.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice coordinated closely with international legal experts. Lawyers presented detailed defenses and procedural objections. Furthermore, they challenged the validity of the company’s claims. Their efforts extended the case timeline and prevented immediate payment.

Later, the case moved into a broader legal review process. Authorities referred the file to the U.S. Attorney General. This step allowed deeper examination of legal arguments and evidence. Therefore, the lawsuit entered a critical phase.

On September 16, 2025, the court issued a final ruling. The decision rejected all claims submitted by the company. Additionally, the court canceled the previous judgment against Iraq. This outcome ended the dispute entirely.

The ministry described the ruling as an Iraq legal victory with significant national impact. Officials stressed that the decision protected public funds. The ruling also strengthened Iraq’s standing in international courts. Consequently, the government avoided severe financial losses.

Moreover, the ministry highlighted the effectiveness of its international legal follow-up. Officials credited coordinated teamwork and persistence. They emphasized commitment to defending Iraq’s sovereign rights. This approach reinforced confidence in state institutions.

The ruling also sent a strong message to foreign contractors. Authorities affirmed Iraq’s readiness to challenge unfair claims. Furthermore, the case demonstrated improved legal capacity abroad. Observers noted increased professionalism in Iraq’s legal defense.

Ultimately, the Iraq legal victory underscored long-term progress in international litigation. Officials pledged continued vigilance in protecting state resources. The ministry confirmed ongoing efforts to strengthen legal frameworks. Iraq aims to prevent similar disputes in the future.
