Iraq Condemns Killings of Nationals in Turkey, Vows Diplomatic Action

Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the killing of two Iraqi nationals in Turkey. The ministry called the incident “unfortunate” and promised to pursue justice through diplomatic channels. This shows Iraq’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad. Indeed, Iraq condemns killings of nationals in Turkey and stresses that such violence cannot be tolerated.

The two brothers, Youssef and Mohammed al-Rawi, died after an altercation with a Turkish citizen on June 26 in Urfa city. Turkish police arrested a suspect soon after the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances.

In a formal statement, the ministry expressed deep regret over the tragic event that affected the Iraqi community in Turkey. It also extended condolences to the victims’ families. The ministry promised humanitarian and social support during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s Consulate General in Gaziantep and its Embassy in Ankara are working closely with Turkish officials. They seek full transparency in the investigation and proper treatment of Iraqi citizens. The ministry reaffirmed its determination to defend Iraqis’ rights abroad. Furthermore, Iraq condemns killings of nationals in Turkey to send a strong message that Iraqi lives matter regardless of borders.

The ministry also stressed its commitment to pursue the case through diplomatic coordination with Turkish authorities. It aims to protect the dignity and rights of Iraqis living or traveling in Turkey.

This tragic event echoes a similar killing last year. In September 2024, someone fatally stabbed Hakim Goran, a Kurdish man from Duhok, in Istanbul. Turkish authorities arrested 12 suspects, including three they believe took part directly. Goran’s family linked the attack to his use of Kurdish, while Turkish officials cited a separate dispute.

The recent killings highlight the complex ties between Iraq and Turkey. In 2024, Iraqis formed the largest group of Arab tourists visiting Turkey, with nearly 969,000 arrivals. Additionally, over 700,000 Iraqis currently live in Turkey. This population includes refugees, students, investors, and workers.

In conclusion, Iraq condemns killings of nationals in Turkey and urges full accountability. The ministry’s diplomatic efforts emphasize protecting Iraqi citizens and ensuring justice.
