Closed Fish Ponds System Boosts Sustainability

Closed fish ponds system is gaining government support in Iraq, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Tuesday. Officials said the initiative offers low-interest loans to farmers and encourages using solar energy to operate the closed-pond systems.

Deputy Minister Mahdi Saher Al-Jubouri said the ministry promotes closed fish ponds system as an alternative to traditional earthen ponds. He explained that this modern and intensive system recycles and treats water, reducing overall consumption.

Al-Jubouri added that the system allows higher fish density in smaller areas while remaining environmentally friendly. He emphasized that these projects support sustainability and efficient resource use, reducing waste and conserving water.

The deputy minister noted that water scarcity has impacted agriculture across Iraq. Closed fish ponds system offers a practical solution to boost fish production, maintain stable prices, and develop the country’s fisheries sector.

He explained that a key feature of this system is complete control over pond conditions, including temperature and other environmental factors. Al-Jubouri stressed that successful implementation requires continuous electricity and specialized technical expertise.

Additionally, the ministry has launched initiatives to support and expand closed fish ponds system. Farmers can access low-interest loans through the Cooperative Agricultural Bank or programs under the Central Bank, enabling solar-powered pond operations.

Using solar energy not only ensures sustainable production but also reduces reliance on traditional electricity, cutting costs and minimizing environmental impact. Al-Jubouri said these efforts create productive, clean-energy projects while conserving water resources.

The government hopes that system will modernize Iraq’s fish farming industry. By combining water recycling, technical expertise, and renewable energy, the initiative strengthens food security and supports long-term agricultural development.

The system represents Iraq’s commitment to sustainable fisheries. The government aims to expand these projects nationwide, promoting innovation, water efficiency, and environmentally friendly practices.

The initiative also encourages farmers to adopt innovative techniques, increasing productivity while protecting water resources. It demonstrates Iraq’s commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly fish farming.
